Greek Competition Commission Approves Joint Venture in Railway Sector

29.10.2024 | 🇬🇷 Greek competition authority

The Greek Competition Commission has approved a joint venture between Hellenic Train and Damco Energy under certain conditions, aiming to enhance competition in the railway freight transport market.

The Greek Competition Commission has granted approval for the establishment of a Joint Venture between Hellenic Train and Damco Energy, focusing on the operation, maintenance, construction, and equipment supply of the Commercial Railway Station and Sorting Station of Thrace Field II. The Commission approved the merger under conditions and commitments to address competition concerns.

The Joint Venture will be responsible for various activities related to the Thrace Field II station, which is expected to serve as a key freight terminal in Greece, facilitating multimodal transportation and contributing to the growth of railway freight transport.

Hellenic Train currently holds a significant market share in railway freight services and a monopolistic position in the maintenance of railway rolling stock. The Commission found that the acquisition of joint control over Thrace Field II could potentially limit competition by strengthening Hellenic Train's dominant position in the market.
