The CMA has identified concerns related to trader recommendation sites, such as misleading claims about traders' performance, inadequate vetting processes, and ineffective complaints and sanctions procedures. These sites are platforms where users can find and connect with traders offering various services like building, plumbing, and home improvements.
In collaboration with key consumer organizations, the CMA analyzed the conduct of trader recommendation sites and highlighted issues such as misleading claims, lack of vetting processes, poor handling of complaints, and presentation of consumer reviews in a misleading manner.
The CMA's draft advice aims to help these sites understand their obligations under consumer protection law. It outlines six key principles for trader recommendation sites to follow, including ensuring clear and accurate claims, conducting proper vetting of traders, and having effective complaints processes.
Interested parties have until August 16, 2024, to provide feedback on the draft advice. The final version will include practical tips for consumers on using trader recommendation sites safely.
