HSBC Continental Europe was fined for its involvement in anticompetitive practices in the Greek banking market, particularly concerning ATM cash withdrawal transactions. The Hellenic Competition Commission found that HSBC, along with other banks, engaged in practices that violated competition laws.
The Commission accepted a settlement offer from HSBC Continental Europe, reducing the fine imposed on the company for its participation in the anticompetitive behavior. Despite HSBC's limited presence in Greece, operating through a subsidiary with a small network of physical branches and ATMs, it was held accountable for its role in the collusion.
The reduced fine amount was based on factors such as HSBC's passive role in the collusion, its limited presence in the Greek market, and a 15% reduction for facilitating procedural efficiency through participation in the settlement process.
