The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) reported a substantial increase in the number of households with access to fiber-optic, reaching 7.13 million in 2023. The rise in fiber-optic plans activated by households, from 300,000 to 2.64 million, indicates a growing adoption rate. The shift towards fiber-optic has led to a decline in copper-based connections, with a focus on shutting down these facilities in areas where fiber-optic is available. ACM is closely monitoring the market, particularly examining KPN's commitment decision regarding rates and conditions for fiber-optic network access. The popularity of voice calling has significantly decreased, with a notable drop in voice minutes over landlines and mobile devices. Additionally, the Dutch are increasingly accessing broadband through fiber-optic or cable, with a significant percentage having plans with download speeds exceeding 100 megabits per second, aligning with the European goal for 2025. Mobile-data consumption has surged, surpassing 2 billion gigabytes in 2023, nearly quadrupling compared to five years ago.
