03.07.2024 | 🇱🇻 Latvian competition authority
The Latvian Competition Council (KP) has approved the merger of SIA “LATVIJAS ZAĻAIS PUNKTS” and SIA “EKO OSTA” after determining that the former will not have a detrimental impact on competition, thus granting permission for the transaction.
SIA “LATVIJAS ZAĻAIS PUNKTS” is part of the AS Eco Baltia group, primarily engaged in environmental management, waste processing, packaging waste management, and cleaning services in the Baltic region. On the other hand, SIA “EKO OSTA” focuses on waste management, including hazardous waste collection and transportation, as well as oil-contaminated water treatment and monitoring.
The activities of the merging companies overlap in the markets for waste management of various products and the systems related to the responsibility of manufacturers of certain goods in Latvia. However, the Competition Council concluded that the merger will not significantly alter market structure, reduce competition, or establish a dominant position in these markets, making the transaction permissible.
To prevent a substantial decrease in competition due to mergers, approval from the Competition Council is required for transactions meeting the criteria set out in competition law. This oversight aims to ensure that structural changes do not limit consumer choices or lead to non-competitive pricing in the long term.
