30.05.2024 | đź‡đź‡ş Hungarian competition authority
A Hungarian online lighting retailer, lampak.hu, was fined 126 million forints by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) for engaging in misleading pricing practices and displaying urgent messages on their website. The Czech company behind the website, Donoci s.r.o., was found to have distorted consumers' transaction decisions by not verifying original prices before promotions, providing false information about product demand, and using urgent messages to create a sense of limited-time offers.
In addition, the company offered two products at a higher price with a gift included, effectively inflating the value of the package. Despite cooperating with the investigation and admitting to the violations, the company was still fined but received a significant reduction due to its cooperative attitude and corrective actions taken.
The case serves as a reminder for businesses to cooperate with national competition authorities, as doing so can lead to reduced fines and, in some cases, avoidance of findings of wrongdoing through appropriate commitments.
