The CNMC has approved a resolution to streamline the process for biomethane producers to connect their plants to the natural gas network efficiently and transparently. Biomethane, derived from urban and agricultural waste, is a renewable gas that can be injected into the network, playing a crucial role in advancing renewable energies and reducing fossil fuel imports. The resolution aims to support the decarbonization goals of the natural gas system in line with European decarbonization strategies and the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). The production of biomethane in Spain, primarily linked to agricultural activities, has shown significant growth, with 9 connected plants producing 243 GWh in 2023, a 40% increase from 2022. The resolution is expected to facilitate interactions between producers and gas operators, aiding in achieving decarbonization objectives.
