Rentalcars.com, a third-party car rental website used by Ryanair Car Hire and Booking.com, corrected misleading information on its platforms following scrutiny by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and EU consumer protection authorities.
A sweep of 78 third-party car rental websites in 10 EU member states and Norway revealed that Rentalcars.com was providing unclear and misleading information to consumers, particularly regarding insurance coverage and contact information for rental car companies.
As a result of the investigation, Rentalcars.com made changes such as clarifying insurance options, disclosing factors affecting rankings, improving contact information visibility, and aligning consumer information across its platforms.
The CCPC and the Belgian Economic Inspection of the FPS Economy oversaw the implementation of these changes and have now concluded their monitoring efforts.
Kevin O’Brien from the CCPC emphasized the importance of clear and accurate information for consumers using third-party car rental websites, warning that authorities will take action against businesses that mislead consumers.
The CCPC and the Belgian Economic Inspection of the FPS Economy are part of the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network, which aims to enforce EU consumer protection laws and address widespread infringements through collaboration among national authorities.
