Competition Authority's Actions Result in €45 Million Savings for Consumers

22.07.2024 | 🇪🇪 Estonian competition authority

The Competition Authority's recent statistics for the period 2020-2022 show that consumers managed to save nearly €45 million through competition oversight.

The Competition Authority in Estonia has joined the European Commission's project to calculate customer savings, with the Commission assessing the benefits to consumers from competition authorities' activities for over a decade. The methodology evaluates potential consumer benefits in prohibited mergers, detected cartels, and abuses of dominant market positions.

Over the past three years, the Competition Authority's oversight has saved consumers an average of €15 million annually, reflecting the tangible impact of the authority's work on consumers' wallets.

In 2024, the Competition Authority will continue monitoring and analyzing crucial markets for consumers, aiming for a return of at least €3 for every euro allocated from the state budget for competition oversight. The focus remains on creating real benefits for consumers that can be quantified.

The Competition Authority's 2024 focus includes markets for fuel, pharmaceuticals, electricity, and groceries to ensure fair prices in vital sectors during turbulent times.

The Competition Authority conducts national supervision in areas such as competition, electricity, natural gas, district heating, postal services, communal water supply and sewage, as well as in the railway, aviation, and port sectors.
