Latvian Competition Council Proposes Amendments to Unfair Trading Practices Prohibition Law to Enhance Fair Competition in Food Retail Sector

07.10.2024 | 🇱🇻 Latvian competition authority

The Latvian Competition Council is discussing proposed amendments to the Unfair Trading Practices Prohibition Law with the Minister of Economics to improve the situation in food product retail, aiming to benefit society and local food producers.

The Latvian Competition Council (KP) is engaging with the Minister of Economics and the Ministry of Economics to discuss proposed amendments to the Unfair Trading Practices Prohibition Law (NTPAL) to enhance fair competition in the food retail sector. A significant study conducted by the KP revealed that around 30% of retailers apply higher markups to Latvian-produced goods compared to imports, prompting policymakers to seek solutions to boost the competitiveness of locally produced goods.

In response to discussions on equal pricing treatment between Latvian and foreign food products, the Cabinet tasked the KP with preparing proposals to promote fair trade practices. The proposed amendments aim to prevent unfair trading practices and ensure equal treatment of suppliers, fostering fair and equal competition in the market.

The proposed amendments include applying equal conditions to suppliers in standard contracts to reduce ambiguity and misunderstandings, as well as timely notification to suppliers about product removal from assortment to mitigate risks and allow for alternative channels.
