Italian Competition Authority Urges Electricity and Gas Companies to Improve Consumer Protection Compliance

02.06.2024 | 🇮🇹 Italian competition authority

The Italian Competition Authority has initiated moral suasion interventions towards 13 electricity and gas companies for non-compliance with consumer protection regulations in their online offers.

The Italian Competition Authority has launched moral suasion interventions towards 13 companies active in the supply of electricity and gas on the free market. The companies targeted include Illumia, Jen Energia, Dolomiti Energia, and others. The Authority is closely monitoring the Electricity and Gas Market.

The interventions were initiated because the companies' online offers did not fully comply with consumer protection regulations. The Authority specifically focused on the transparency and completeness of promotional information provided to consumers, including economic components and environmental claims.

Critical issues were identified in various cost items, with some charges in the energy price missing. Additionally, environmental claims made by the companies lacked substantiated and certified information on concrete actions taken. The companies were urged to supplement their promotional information with clear details on all charges and provide correct information on green claims with supporting certifications.

These actions reflect the Competition Authority's ongoing attention to the electricity and gas market. President Roberto Rustichelli emphasized this focus during a hearing on the transition from the protected market to the free electricity market at the Chamber of Deputies.
