CMA Raises Concerns Over Ventilation System Merger Impact on Competition

22.08.2024 | 🇬🇧 UK competition authority

The CMA provisionally finds that Lindab's acquisition of HAS-Vent could lead to reduced competition and higher costs for circular ducts and fittings in specific local areas.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is conducting an in-depth Phase 2 inquiry into Lindab International AB's purchase of HAS-Vent Holdings Limited (HAS-Vent) due to competition concerns identified during Phase 1. The focus is on the impact of the deal on the supply of circular ducts and fittings in England and Wales.

Based on evidence from internal documents and industry stakeholders, the CMA group leading the inquiry believes that competition for these products is primarily at a local level. The provisional findings suggest a substantial lessening of competition in circular ducts and fittings supply in areas around Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent, potentially leading to higher prices in the construction sector.

The Chair of the inquiry group, Kirstin Baker, expressed concerns about the deal potentially eliminating a major supplier in the Nottingham and Stoke areas, which could result in increased costs for ventilation system installers and their customers.
