ZuivelNL, the trade association for the Dutch dairy industry, has committed to using dairy farmers' monthly contributions only for activities related to the sale of milk, in compliance with the Dutch Act on unfair trading practices in the agricultural and food supply chain. This move aims to enhance transparency and protect farmers from paying for unrelated expenses.
The commitment by ZuivelNL came after an investigation initiated by ACM following a complaint from an association of dairy farmers (LVLC) regarding the contribution payments made through their buyers. ZuivelNL's pledge is seen as a positive development for dairy farmers, empowering them in their dealings with buyers and ensuring fair practices in the industry.
Under the Act, milk buyers like Royal Lactalis Leerdammer and FrieslandCampina are prohibited from charging suppliers payments not linked to milk sales. ZuivelNL will now provide detailed information to dairy farmers on how their contributions are utilized, allowing farmers to influence the contribution amount through representation within the association.
ACM will oversee ZuivelNL's compliance with the commitment, ensuring that the contributions collected align with the regulations even beyond the current decision period. The Act aims to strengthen the position of farmers, growers, and fishermen in the supply chain, protecting them from unfair trading practices and unrelated financial burdens.
