The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) conducted an investigation into the website www.destapnaarhuren.nl after receiving reports of potential consumer deception. The owner decided to take down the website in response to ACM's actions.
The website offered a course priced at 1,500 euros to help individuals seeking social housing improve their chances of securing an apartment. Given the high demand for social housing, the target audience was significant and vulnerable to such offers, prompting ACM's intervention for consumer protection.
ACM found that the website contained misleading information about the course and its effectiveness, including listing positive customer experiences before the course had even been delivered. Following ACM's contact, the owner opted to remove the website, leading to the conclusion of ACM's investigation. However, ACM will monitor the business owner in the coming months.
Consumers can still report issues to ACM ConsuWijzer, the consumer information portal of ACM, which plays a crucial role in the organization's regulatory activities.
