22.12.2024 | đź‡đź‡ş Hungarian competition authority
The GVH Podcast's latest episode discusses the potential impacts of AI applications on corporate competitiveness and productivity, as well as the implications of the growing consumer reach of generative AI models. The episode features insights from a market analysis conducted by Hungary's national competition authority, which was concluded in October 2024.
In response to the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the Gazdasági Versenyhivatal (GVH) initiated a market analysis in January, becoming one of the first national competition authorities in the EU to do so. The analysis aimed to assess whether the explosive growth of AI could distort market competition across various sectors and potentially put consumers in a more vulnerable position.
The findings of the analysis revealed that the development and effective application of AI-based models require several critical resources, which are predominantly concentrated in the hands of leading companies in the digital market, such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that the use of AI is not widespread among domestic businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which could significantly diminish their competitiveness in the long run.
Based on the analysis, the GVH made several recommendations to lawmakers and market participants, including promoting AI usage centered around SMEs in the domestic corporate sector, ensuring consumers receive timely and transparent information, and fostering the development of Hungarian large language models.
In the podcast, GVH's chief economist Berezvai Zombor and investigator Dr. Csernyánszky Mihály provide a deeper understanding of the methodology, results, and potential implications of the market analysis. They discuss how developers and companies utilizing AI view the technology at its current stage of development, as well as the availability of critical resources and future challenges related to them. The episode also covers initiatives for developing domestic AI-based models, particularly large language models, and the potential consumer impacts and risks associated with technological advancements.
