The latest Telecom Monitor from the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) reveals significant trends in the Dutch telecom sector for Q3 2024. Mobile-data consumption has reached a record high, surpassing 600 million GB for the first time. Concurrently, the roll-out of fiber-optic connections is progressing, with 7.94 million households now having access, up from 7.69 million in the previous quarter.
Despite the growth in mobile data and fiber-optic services, traditional telecom services are experiencing a decline. The number of television subscriptions has dropped to approximately 6.92 million, with notable decreases in cable and copper services. However, there has been a slight increase in fiber-optic television viewing, which rose by 1.6%.
Additionally, the trend of reduced voice communication continues, as fewer text messages are being sent—503 million in Q3 compared to 520 million in Q2. The number of households with landlines has also decreased, falling from 4.15 million to 4.10 million. Market shares among telecom operators remain stable, with KPN and VodafoneZiggo leading in broadband and KPN and Odido dominating the mobile market.
ACM's Telecom Monitor is published quarterly, providing insights into the telecom sector's trends and developments. The data collected from major market participants is crucial for ACM's analyses. Looking ahead, ACM plans to release a market scan and consumer survey in mid-January, which will assess competition in the broadband markets and consumer perceptions.
