04.07.2024 | 🇪🇪 Estonian competition authority
A Competition Authority analysis focused on the trends in orthodontic services over the past decade in Estonia and the current competitive landscape found a shortage of orthodontic services in the country.
The analysis highlighted that despite a stable number of orthodontists over the last ten years, the increased number of patients has resulted in long waiting times and market distortions, limiting effective competition and hindering consumer choice.
The Competition Authority suggests strategic regulation by the state to increase the number of orthodontic service providers and create more educational opportunities in the field to improve the competitive situation.
To enhance competition, the Authority recommends establishing a national strategic vision to address the underprovision issue, ensuring transparent policies focused on consumer welfare, and expanding orthodontic services and educational opportunities at Tartu University.
A roundtable organized by the Competition Authority in June involved stakeholders like the Estonian Orthodontic Society, Estonian Dental Association, Tartu University, Health Board, Health Insurance Fund, and Ministry of Social Affairs to discuss the initial findings and gather feedback for further analysis.
