Autobutler Fined 7 Million Kroner for Price Fixing

19.12.2024 | 🇩🇰 Danish competition authority

Autobutler has been fined 7 million kroner for violating competition laws by establishing fixed pricing agreements with mechanics, which stifled competition and potentially raised consumer prices.

Autobutler, an online platform connecting car owners with repair shops, has been fined 7 million kroner after the Danish Competition Authority found that it had engaged in price-fixing agreements with hundreds of mechanics. These agreements, which were in place from at least March 2016 to October 2021, covered various services including air conditioning service, basic service, and oil changes.

The Competition Authority's director, Jakob Hald, emphasized that fixed pricing agreements undermine competition and can lead to higher prices for consumers. He noted that platforms like Autobutler must ensure that independent businesses set their own prices to maintain a competitive market.

The agreements prevented participating workshops from competing on price, which could have reduced customer mobility and weakened competition among the workshops. This situation generally results in higher prices and lower quality for consumers.

In determining the fine, the authority considered the severity and extent of Autobutler's violations, the duration of the misconduct, and the company's revenue. The company’s cooperation in resolving the case was also taken into account.
