CCPC clears Formpress Publishing’s purchase of Inishowen Independent

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has given the go-ahead for Formpress Publishing to purchase D&D Media. The deal is now subject to further approval by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.


D&D Media owns the Inishowen Independent. Formpress Publishing owns a number of local and regional newspaper titles across Ireland, including the Donegal Democrat and Donegal Post. Mergers between media companies must be notified to the CCPC regardless of the size of the companies involved.


This proposed transaction (M/24/026) was notified to the CCPC in April 2024. The CCPC decided in August that a full investigation was required to establish whether the proposed purchase would lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the State.


Following this examination, the CCPC has determined that the proposed transaction will not substantially lessen competition.

CCPC Approves Formpress Publishing's Acquisition of Inishowen Independent

The CCPC has approved Formpress Publishing's acquisition of D&D Media, which owns Inishowen Independent, subject to final Ministerial approval. Formpress Publishing holds various local and regional newspaper titles in Ireland.

All media company mergers in Ireland, regardless of size, must be notified to the CCPC. The proposed transaction was notified in April 2024, leading to a full investigation by the CCPC to assess its impact on competition.

After thorough examination, the CCPC has concluded that the acquisition will not result in a significant reduction of competition in the market, clearing the way for the deal to proceed.
