CCPC Halts Sale of Hazardous Amber Teething Jewelry for Children

03.06.2024 | 🇮🇪 Irish competition authority

The CCPC has intervened to stop the sale of dangerous amber teething jewelry for babies and small children in Irish retailers due to the serious risks they pose.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has taken action to prevent the sale of hazardous amber teething jewelry designed for babies and small children in several Irish retailers. These products present significant risks such as strangulation and choking.

Amber teething products like necklaces, bracelets, and anklets have been increasingly marketed as aids for teething babies in Ireland and Europe. However, the CCPC has highlighted the dangers associated with these items, prompting a call for businesses to cease selling or promoting them as teething aids.

Responding to consumer reports, CCPC experts have instructed multiple distributors in Ireland to cease the sale of amber teething jewelry both in physical stores and online. Collaborating with the HSE, the CCPC aims to provide businesses with updated information on the risks of these products and is cooperating with European product safety authorities to identify suppliers selling these items in Ireland.

Grainne Griffin, CCPC Director of Communications, emphasized the risks posed by amber teething jewelry to babies and children, urging the public to report any sightings of these products being marketed for use with children. Dr. Abigail Collins from the HSE highlighted the lack of evidence supporting claims of pain relief from amber teething jewelry and advised alternative safe teething remedies for children.
