Telenet's Commitments Accepted by Belgian Competition Authority in Cyclo-Cross Broadcasting Rights Case

21.05.2024 | 🇧🇪 Belgian competition authority

The Belgian Competition Authority has accepted commitments from Telenet regarding the allocation and acquisition of broadcasting rights for cyclo-cross races, addressing concerns of potential competition restrictions.

The Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) has concluded its investigation into Telenet's exclusive acquisition of live broadcast rights for cyclo-cross races. Initially, the BCA was concerned that this could limit competition in both the cyclo-cross broadcasting rights market and the retail television services market.

Telenet offered commitments to address the BCA's concerns, including acquiring rights through transparent tendering, limiting exclusive agreements to four years, and not acquiring more than 75% of cyclo-cross race broadcasting rights in a season. These commitments will be in force until the end of the 2026-2027 cyclocross season.

The BCA deemed Telenet's commitments proportionate and sufficient, thus making them binding. The decision will be published on the BCA website for further reference.

The BCA is an independent administrative authority in Belgium that focuses on enforcing competition policy, targeting anti-competitive practices like cartels and abuses of dominance, and reviewing major merger operations. It collaborates with other EU competition authorities and the European Commission through the European Competition Network (ECN).
