CCPC Launches In-Depth Review of Circle K's Acquisition of Pelco

05.12.2024 | 🇮🇪 Irish competition authority

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has initiated a full investigation into Circle K's proposed acquisition of Pelco Holdings, focusing on potential impacts on market competition.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has announced a comprehensive investigation into Circle K’s plan to acquire Pelco Holdings Limited, which operates service stations and convenience stores. This decision follows a preliminary review that raised concerns about the potential effects on competition in the market.

Circle K Ireland Holding Limited is a significant player in the retail sale of motor fuels, managing numerous service stations and convenience stores throughout Ireland. Pelco Holdings similarly operates in this sector, with service stations located in Dublin, Meath, and Westmeath.

The CCPC's role under competition law is to evaluate mergers and acquisitions to prevent any detrimental effects on competition. This includes assessing how such transactions might influence consumer prices, choices, quality of service, and innovation in the market.

The proposed acquisition was submitted to the CCPC in July 2024, and the commission has now determined that a full investigation is warranted to ascertain whether the merger could significantly lessen competition within the state.

The CCPC is inviting feedback from interested parties, with submissions due by 4:30 PM on December 19, 2024. As the investigation is still in progress, further details will not be disclosed at this time.
