CMA Continues Efforts to Address High Fuel Prices and Grocery Competition

25.07.2024 | 🇬🇧 UK competition authority

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) updates on ongoing actions to tackle high fuel prices and ensure effective competition in the groceries sector amidst cost of living pressures.

The CMA's latest update reveals that fuel retailers' margins remain significantly above historic levels, costing drivers over £1.6bn in 2023 alone. Supermarkets' fuel margins have doubled since 2019, indicating weakened competition in the fuel sector.

The CMA recommends the establishment of a real-time fuel finder scheme to empower motorists to find cheaper fuel easily, potentially saving up to £4.50 per fill-up. The CMA is monitoring the fuel market and encourages the government to introduce a comprehensive scheme to enhance competition.

In the groceries sector, the CMA's review shows that retailer profitability has slightly increased, with operating margins below 3%. The CMA found no widespread evidence of weak competition, but continues to monitor pricing practices to ensure consumers get the best deals.

The CMA is investigating pricing issues, including unit pricing consistency, loyalty scheme savings genuineness, and significant price rises in infant formula. An interim report on infant formula concerns and recommendations is expected in October.
