Spain's E-commerce Thrives in 2023 with Over €84 Billion Revenue

E-commerce in Spain surged by 16.3% in 2023, surpassing €84 billion, with significant growth in various sectors and international transactions.


E-commerce in Spain experienced a substantial increase in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023, reaching €22.707 billion, a 15.6% rise compared to the previous year, as per CNMCData.

The top sectors contributing to the revenue were travel agencies and tour operators, clothing, and air transport.

In terms of transaction volume, over 432 million transactions were recorded in Q4 2023, marking a 15.1% increase, with gambling and betting leading in transaction percentages.

Regarding geographical segmentation, 40.1% of the revenue in Q4 2023 was from transactions within Spain, while the remaining 59.9% were purchases originating in Spain but made abroad.

Spain experienced a deficit of €11.118 billion in net external balance, with 34.1% of transactions being domestic and 65.9% international.

Transactions from Spain to foreign countries amounted to €13.593 billion, a 19% increase, with the majority of purchases made within the EU.

Conversely, purchases from abroad to Spain totaled €2.475 billion, a 21.6% rise, with 62.7% originating from the EU.

Domestic e-commerce revenue in Spain grew by 7.2% year-on-year, reaching €6.638 billion, with the public administration, taxes, and social security sector leading in revenue generation.
