Hungarian Competition Authority and Media Regulator Strengthen Cooperation for Consumer Protection in Digital Space

10.07.2024 | 🇭🇺 Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian Competition Authority and the National Media and Infocommunications Authority have renewed their collaboration to enhance consumer protection in the digital sphere.

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) and the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) have extended their longstanding professional cooperation to more effectively fulfill their legal duties, with a focus on consumer protection in the digital realm. This renewed collaboration includes tasks stemming from the implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) regulation.

The DSA, an EU regulation, imposes obligations primarily on online intermediaries such as marketplaces, social networks, app stores, and online travel and accommodation platforms to prevent illegal and harmful online activities, including intentional disinformation, thereby safeguarding consumers in the online space. In Hungary, NMHH is responsible for enforcing the DSA, closely collaborating with GVH on issues affecting competition in digital service markets and user-related matters.

Through this reinforced cooperation, the two authorities aim to more efficiently carry out their responsibilities, including overseeing the media market, electronic communications, and postal services, ensuring their reliable and transparent operation, safeguarding fair market competition, protecting consumers, and uncovering violations. They have committed to close collaboration in their enforcement activities, conducting regular consultations and informing each other of information relevant to the other authority's tasks and competencies.
