The Bundeskartellamt has terminated an administrative proceeding against Robert Bosch GmbH concerning the alleged abuse of a dominant position in the e-bike anti-lock braking systems (ABS) market.
The probe was initiated based on a complaint filed by Blubrake, an ABS provider from Italy, accusing Bosch of impeding the use of its e-bike system for Blubrake's ABS and refusing to provide necessary technical specifications for communication.
In support of the Italian competition authority's investigation, the Bundeskartellamt provided administrative assistance and launched its own inquiry to assess potential effects in Germany.
The Italian authority's investigation concluded with Bosch offering commitments to grant access to its e-bike system for potential ABS providers in the European Economic Area, including Germany, leading to the discontinuation of the Bundeskartellamt's proceeding.
E-bike systems consist of components like the drive unit, battery, charging system, and on-board computer, forming the technological platform to which all other electrical components must connect. Manufacturers typically rely on complete e-bike systems from manufacturers like Bosch.
Anti-lock braking systems are common in higher-end e-bikes, preventing front wheel skidding during sudden braking. The ABS needs to be connected to the e-bike system for power and linked to the on-board computer via software to relay operational information to the rider.
