11.03.2024 | 🇬🇧 UK competition authority
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has decided to launch a formal Market Investigation into the veterinary services market due to concerns such as difficulties for pet owners in accessing pricing information and prescription costs, potential overcharging for medicines, weak competition driven by sector consolidation, and incentives for large corporate groups to act in ways that reduce competition and choice. The CMA's review, initiated in September 2023, received a significant response from the public and veterinary professionals, leading to the proposal for a market investigation to address the identified concerns. The investigation will involve seeking views from the sector through a 4-week consultation, with the aim of intervening directly in the market if necessary by mandating information provision, imposing maximum prescription fees, or ordering the sale or disposal of businesses or assets. The Market Reference Group will play a crucial role in determining whether there is a prevention, restriction, or distortion of competition and deciding on appropriate actions to address any adverse effects.
