In 2023, 13.9% of households switched electricity providers, while 14.4% changed natural gas providers, marking a substantial increase over two years. The latest CNMC Household Panel data for Q4 2023 reveals these trends.
Additionally, 11.4% switched mobile phone providers in the past year, with 75.3% not considering a change. The survey covered 5,148 households and 8,601 individuals, providing insights into consumer behavior across various sectors.
Reasons for switching included cost savings on energy bills, driving about 80% of provider changes for electricity and gas. For fixed broadband services, saving on bills was the primary motivator for 67.5% of households, followed by dissatisfaction with service quality and the desire for faster internet.
While a significant percentage found switching broadband or mobile providers challenging, the difficulty rate has been gradually decreasing since 2021. In the energy sector, 6.8% found switching electricity providers difficult, compared to 12.1% for natural gas.
The CNMC's Household Panel survey aims to gather consumer insights through biannual surveys and bill analysis, covering sectors like telecommunications, energy, postal, and transportation. The tool, based on 2023 Q4 data, offers a comprehensive view of consumer perspectives.
