05.12.2024 | 🇱🇻 Latvian competition authority

Kārlis Piģēns has been re-elected to the OECD Competition Committee Bureau, continuing his role in shaping international competition policy for Latvia through 2025.

On December 5, Kārlis Piģēns, a member of the Competition Council, was unanimously re-elected to the Bureau of the OECD Competition Committee. This re-election allows him to continue his work on international competition policy until 2025.

Piģēns expressed that his re-election, as the only representative from the Baltic states, reinforces the positive recognition of the Competition Council's work on an international level among the world's economically developed countries.

Alongside Piģēns, representatives from various countries including France, the UK, Australia, Romania, Poland, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, the EU competition law institutions, South Korea, Italy, Mexico, Germany, Greece, and Norway were also elected to the Bureau.

In 2024, Piģēns represented Latvia in the Bureau, marking a significant return since the last representation by the previous head of the Competition Council, Skaidrīte Ābrama, in 2018, who was the first Eastern European representative in the Bureau.

The OECD, established in 1961, is an intergovernmental organization that unites 38 of the world's most developed countries, headquartered in Paris, France. Latvia became the 35th member of the OECD on July 1, 2016.

The OECD serves as a unique forum and globally recognized center of expertise, enabling member countries to effectively address issues across various sectors. Its mission is to promote reforms that enhance living standards and socio-economic conditions, as well as economic competitiveness. To achieve these goals, the OECD collaborates with national governments and policymakers to develop international guidelines and standards aimed at fostering sustainable development and addressing pressing global challenges, with work organized into thematic committees, including the Competition Committee.
