ACM's Report on Consumer Energy Market: Prices Slightly Increase, More Households Opt for Dynamic Contracts

15.11.2024 | 🇳🇱 Dutch competition authority

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) reports a slight increase in electricity and natural gas prices, with a growing number of households choosing dynamic energy contracts.

The ACM's Monitor on the consumer energy market in the Netherlands reveals a slight increase in prices for both electricity and natural gas. Variable contracts have become 1.5% more expensive on average, while fixed contracts saw a 1% increase, reflecting trends in wholesale markets.

Dynamic energy contracts, where prices directly follow wholesale market prices, are gaining popularity among households. Over 5% of households now have dynamic contracts, allowing them to adjust energy consumption based on fluctuating prices.

Customers with dynamic contracts can see prices in advance and benefit from lower prices during high supply periods. However, they must be financially prepared for unexpected price hikes and be able to adapt energy usage patterns accordingly.

ACM's report highlights significant cost variations among dynamic suppliers, with differences amounting to hundreds of euros annually for an average household. Transparency in pricing, including fixed costs, surcharges, VAT, and energy taxes, is crucial for customer comparison.

The number of suppliers offering dynamic contracts is increasing, with 32 currently in the market. Larger suppliers are also entering this space, driven by regulatory requirements under the new Dutch Energy Act.
