French Competition Authority Fines Electrical Equipment Companies for Vertical Price Fixing

29.10.2024 | 🇫🇷 French competition authority

The Autorité de la concurrence has fined Schneider Electric, Legrand, Rexel, and Sonepar a total of €470 million for engaging in vertical resale price fixing in the low-voltage electrical equipment sector.

The French Competition Authority imposed fines totaling €470 million on Schneider Electric, Legrand, Rexel, and Sonepar for engaging in two separate vertical price-fixing agreements in the low-voltage electrical equipment sector. The agreements allowed manufacturers to set resale prices to end customers, limiting competition between distributors and maintaining high prices.

The practices were uncovered through a judicial investigation and raids, revealing that the companies had fixed prices under the guise of a 'derogation' system. Despite the serious nature of the violations, the companies benefited mutually from the fixed price system.

The fines were justified by the serious anticompetitive nature of vertical price-fixing practices, the impact on market competition, the companies' awareness of their actions, and their financial power. Rexel received a 20% reduction in its fine due to its efforts to reform the derogation system.
