GVH Imposes Fines on 4Life and Insurance Partners for Incomplete Compensation to Consumers

02.05.2024 | 🇭🇺 Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian Competition Authority fines 4Life Direct and its insurance partners for partially failing to compensate consumers as agreed, following a successful investigation resulting in significant payouts to affected consumers.

A Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) conducted a follow-up inspection on the commitment made by 4Life Direct and its insurance partners, revealing that while some consumers received significant compensation, others were only partially compensated as per the commitment, leading to a total fine of 40 million forints imposed on the companies.

In 2019, GVH concluded its proceedings against 4Life Direct Kft., Red Sands Life Assurance Company (Europe) Limited, and Red Sands Insurance Company (Europe) Limited, focusing on the companies' consumer communications. The companies committed to paying close to 100 million forints in compensation to affected beneficiaries and implementing compliance programs for future commercial communications.

During the follow-up inspection, GVH found that about two-thirds of the affected consumers received the promised payments in line with the commitment, indicating the success of the original investigation. However, deficiencies were identified in the remaining consumers' compensation, leading to a fine of 40 million forints imposed on the companies by the GVH Competition Council.

The national competition authority emphasizes the importance of companies meticulously preparing and fully fulfilling their commitments, warning of significant fines in case of incomplete performance.
