CCPC and EU Authorities Urge Apple to Cease Geo-Blocking Practices on Its Services

11.11.2024 | 🇮🇪 Irish competition authority

The CCPC and other European consumer authorities are urging Apple to stop geo-blocking on its services following an investigation revealing potential breaches of regulations.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, along with other European consumer authorities, is calling on Apple to cease geo-blocking on its services. An investigation found potential breaches of geo-blocking regulations on Apple media services like the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Books, and Apple Podcasts.

The EU Geo-blocking Regulation prohibits unjustified discrimination between EU customers based on nationality, residence, or place of establishment when purchasing goods and services from traders in a different Member State. National consumer authorities, as part of the CPC Network, can investigate and act collectively to address widespread infringements of EU consumer law.

The CPC Network has requested Apple to propose commitments aligning its practices with the EU's anti-geo-blocking rules. If Apple fails to address concerns, national authorities can take enforcement measures to ensure compliance.
