Latvian Competition Council Proposes Amendments to Combat Unfair Trading Practices in Food Retail Sector

24.07.2024 | 🇱🇻 Latvian competition authority

Latvia's Competition Council initiates extensive research and submits proposals to the Ministry of Economics to amend regulations aiming to improve the situation in the food retail sector.

Latvia's Competition Council (KP) conducted a comprehensive study analyzing price changes of food products and the transfer of costs from manufacturers to retailers, wholesalers, and small retailers. They found that some local retailers apply higher markups to Latvian-produced goods compared to imports.

KP proposed amendments to the Unfair Trading Practices Prohibition Law to prohibit discriminatory practices by buyers and unequal conditions in the market, presenting them to industry associations and in a consultative council meeting.

Following support from the government, KP submitted the proposed amendments to the Ministry of Economics for further public consultation and consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers.

In response to government directives, future tasks include increasing the share of local products in retail, enhancing communication between retailers and suppliers, and introducing a digital tool for comparing food prices.

The Ministry of Economics will compile the proposals and prepare responses to the Parliament's committee by November 20 for potential solutions to improve the situation.
