The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) is warning consumers about the risks associated with untrustworthy online stores, especially in the lead-up to the holidays. Issues such as delayed deliveries, high return costs, refund challenges, and poor customer service are prevalent, with dropshippers exacerbating these problems by shipping directly from China.
ACM has seen a significant increase in reports and inquiries related to online purchases, with over 20,000 received in 2024 so far, surpassing the total for 2023. Consumers are advised to conduct thorough checks on the credibility of online stores before placing orders to avoid potential financial losses.
Director of ACM's Consumer Department, Edwin van Houten, emphasizes the importance of researching online stores before making purchases, particularly during the holiday season when enticing deals are abundant. He recommends checking multiple review sites for authentic feedback to distinguish trustworthy stores from unreliable ones.
Consumers are encouraged to look beyond reviews posted on the online store's website, as these can be manipulated. Instead, they should search for reviews using the store's URL on various platforms to gather a more accurate representation of the seller's reputation. Additionally, opting for payment methods with buyer protection, such as credit cards, and consulting law enforcement reports can enhance consumer safety.
ACM's campaign targets young adults aged 18 to 30 through social media videos, streaming platform ads, and podcast radio commercials. The initiative aims to educate this demographic about the importance of verifying online store credibility before making purchases. By promoting the message 'check before you buy,' ACM seeks to empower consumers to make informed decisions.
Collaborating with consumer organizations like the Dutch Consumers' Association, the European Consumer Centre, and the Fraud Help Desk, ACM amplifies its efforts to combat online scams and fraud. By raising awareness and providing resources such as the Checklist for safe online shopping, these organizations work collectively to protect consumers from deceptive practices.
