GVH President Highlights Consumer Protection in Tech Industry Oversight

09.12.2024 | 🇭🇺 Hungarian competition authority

Rigó Csaba Balázs, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), emphasized the importance of protecting consumer interests during a recent presentation on regulatory actions against major tech companies.

On December 10, 2024, Rigó Csaba Balázs delivered a presentation at the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Government College, discussing the GVH's experiences with competition oversight against large technology firms and the results of a market analysis on the impact of artificial intelligence on competition.

Balázs stressed that fair market competition requires uniform rules for all participants, regardless of whether they are domestic companies or international giants. He highlighted the importance of effective collaboration among consumer protection authorities to enhance the efficiency of regulatory work against major tech companies.

In 2024, the GVH received approximately 2,000 complaints and reports, with a quarter of these being forwarded to relevant government authorities for individual consumer protection cases. Balázs noted that the cooperation with consumer protection agencies is crucial in addressing issues related to large technology firms.

The GVH has previously regulated companies such as Viber, Google, Apple, and TikTok, and is currently investigating Microsoft and Temu. Balázs also discussed the findings of the GVH's market analysis regarding the application of artificial intelligence, warning that the rapid spread of AI technologies could disadvantage small and medium-sized enterprises if they do not adopt these technologies.
