The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in Ireland conducts inspections across various sectors following a rise in consumer complaints.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in Ireland conducted nationwide inspections in response to a surge in consumer complaints. The inspections aimed to ensure businesses' compliance with consumer protection laws.

Last week, CCPC enforcement officers inspected businesses in 8 counties, covering sectors such as hospitality, beauty, motor, and retail. A total of 59 inspections were carried out, with a focus on identifying breaches of consumer protection laws.

Particular attention was given to businesses in Galway and Killarney catering to the tourism industry. Breaches identified included unclear pricing displays and misleading product information. In other areas like Carlow, Dublin, and Wexford, the focus was on the motor and retail sectors, with concerns raised about pricing and faulty goods.

The CCPC emphasized the importance of consumer complaints in identifying sectors at risk. The Commission is prepared to take action and prosecute businesses found to be in breach of consumer law, with a focus on ensuring compliance and empowering consumers.

The CCPC is committed to using its enforcement powers, including fines, compliance notices, and criminal prosecutions, to protect consumers. Traders who breach consumer protection laws may face penalties, and their names could be published in the CCPC's Consumer Protection List.

Consumers are encouraged to report concerns about potential breaches of consumer law to the CCPC through the national helpline or email, to help in safeguarding consumer rights.
