Hungarian Competition Authority Investigates Green Claims on PET Bottles

11.08.2024 | 🇭🇺 Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian Competition Authority has initiated proceedings against several companies for potentially misleading environmental claims on mineral water and soft drink bottles.

A Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has launched proceedings against multiple companies for allegedly misleading consumers with environmental claims on the labels of mineral water and soft drink bottles.

The companies under investigation include Fonte Viva Kft., Szentkirályi Magyarország Kft., Coca-Cola HBC Magyarország Kft., Coca-Cola Magyarország Szolgáltató Kft., and The Coca Cola Company, for statements such as '100% recycled PET bottle' and '100% recyclable', which are suspected to deceive consumers.

The GVH is examining whether these companies engaged in 'greenwashing' by making unverifiable environmental claims in their marketing communications, without sufficient evidence to support the environmental benefits of their products.
