Competition Commission Initiates Mapping in Animal Feed Sector

08.07.2024 | 🇬🇷 Greek competition authority

The Competition Commission has launched a mapping exercise in the animal feed sector to investigate competition conditions, following a similar initiative in veterinary pharmaceutical products.

The Competition Commission in Greece has decided to conduct a mapping exercise in the animal feed sector to delve into competition conditions prevailing in the industry. This initiative complements a previous mapping exercise in veterinary pharmaceutical products initiated by the Commission.

Both investigations are part of the Commission's strategy to study competition conditions in the agri-food sector in Greece, particularly in the supply chain of essential foods. The Commission began implementing this strategy in 2023 with a study on six key consumer goods at the retail level, including fresh milk.

The mapping exercises launched in 2024 focus on the earlier stages of the supply chain, specifically inputs that collectively represent a high percentage of producers' costs. Animal feeds (along with veterinary pharmaceutical products) represent 75% of costs in livestock farming, with the composite feed price index increasing by 33% from 2020 to the third quarter of 2023.
