The Office for the Protection of Competition in the Czech Republic signed a cooperation agreement with the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) to improve the protection of the EU's financial interests and promote fair competition. The agreement allows for the exchange of strategic information and mutual education and training between the two authorities.
Under the agreement, the Office for the Protection of Competition can share information on economic offenses related to the use of EU funds with the EPPO. The EPPO, established in 2021, focuses on investigating and prosecuting crimes affecting the EU's financial interests, such as misuse of funds, money laundering, and corruption.
The EPPO operates as a prosecutor before the courts of EU member states, working independently from national authorities. Its central office is in Luxembourg, with 22 European prosecutors based there and additional offices in participating EU countries. Since its establishment, the EPPO has registered over 4,000 criminal charges, initiated 900 investigations, and seized nearly €260 million.
