CMA Investigates UK Veterinary Services for Household Pets

24.09.2024 | 🇬🇧 UK competition authority

The CMA is conducting a market investigation into veterinary services for household pets in the UK, aiming to address concerns about costs and quality of care.

In response to the strong public and professional interest, the CMA launched a market investigation into veterinary services for household pets in the UK. The Inquiry Group, chaired by Martin Coleman, is exploring issues such as information provided to pet owners, competition among vet practices, profitability, and regulatory frameworks.

The CMA has conducted site visits to various vet practices across the UK, held roundtable discussions with veterinary professionals and animal charities, and organized 'teach-in' sessions with key organizations in the veterinary sector to gather insights and concerns.

The CMA is using its formal powers to gather information from vets and vet businesses to analyze their operations and gather evidence for the investigation.

Additionally, the CMA has appointed a veterinary advisory panel to provide clinical and practical insights throughout the investigation, focusing on the operation of vet practices, interactions with pet owners, clinical practice, and regulation.

The progress of the investigation is on track, with a provisional decision expected by the middle of the following year, aiming to make well-informed decisions to address concerns raised by pet owners and vet professionals.
