The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued a Compliance Notice to Solid Motors Limited, also known as 7 Seaters Ireland, for failing to provide accurate information to consumers and engaging in misleading practices.
Traders are required to disclose relevant information to consumers before a purchase, including details about a vehicle's history such as previous damage, write-offs, or incorrect mileage. Providing false or deceptive information is considered an offence.
A consumer reported purchasing a car from 7 Seaters Ireland without being informed that it had been previously damaged and written off in the UK. The CCPC found that the consumer would not have bought the vehicle if this information was disclosed. Additionally, an online ad by the dealer did not mention that the car was an insurance write-off.
As a result of the investigation, a Compliance Notice was issued to 7 Seaters Ireland under the Consumer Protection Act 2007. The notice requires the dealer to conduct history checks on all future car sales and inform consumers if a vehicle has been crashed, damaged, or written off.
While consumer protection laws impose obligations on traders, the CCPC advises consumers to independently verify a car's history and use the CCPC's Car Buyers Checklist when purchasing a used car. Consumers who suspect they have been misled are encouraged to contact the CCPC's Consumer Helpline or website to report their concerns.
