24.07.2024 | 🇭🇺 Hungarian competition authority

The President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) emphasizes the importance of minimizing administrative barriers and ensuring equal competition conditions to foster innovation and competitiveness in Europe.

Rigó Csaba Balázs, the President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), highlighted the necessity of reducing administrative obstacles and creating fair competition conditions for the spread of new technologies and the establishment of competitive businesses and industries. He warned that regulations serving geopolitical interests could harm the economic interests of the European Union and its member states in the long run.

During a panel discussion at the 33rd 'Tusványos' Baile Tusnad Summer University and Student Camp, experts examined the reasons behind Europe's lagging competitiveness, particularly in cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G. The GVH President stressed the importance of consumer and data protection regulations, such as the latest Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA), while cautioning against excessive regulation and bureaucratic hurdles hindering competitiveness, innovation, and the growth of national and European industry leaders.

Rigó Csaba Balázs emphasized the need to prioritize consumer welfare and actively engage with European companies on strategic and regulatory matters to enhance European competitiveness. Looking ahead, he called for the EU to focus on innovation, breaking down administrative barriers, revitalizing enlargement policies, accelerating demographic trends, and supporting education and preparation of competition authorities in the Western Balkans region.
