Konsum Leipzig's Merger with EDEKA Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen Cleared by Bundeskartellamt

14.05.2024 | 🇩🇪 German competition authority

The Bundeskartellamt has approved the merger of Konsum Leipzig with EDEKA Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen, allowing Konsum Leipzig to join the EDEKA group.

The Bundeskartellamt has given the green light for Konsum Leipzig to become part of the EDEKA group, following a detailed examination. This merger was considered a concentration subject to merger control due to Konsum Leipzig coming under EDEKA's central management. The merger will not significantly impede competition in the local food retail markets of Leipzig, Halle, and the surrounding region, as there are strong competitors like REWE and the Schwarz Group (Lidl, Kaufland) present. The EDEKA group, with a turnover of over 70 billion euros in 2023, operates through a three-tier structure comprising the EDEKA Zentrale, regional companies, and regional cooperatives. Konsum Leipzig, with around 29,000 members and 60 food retail outlets, already sources a large portion of its goods from EDEKA.
