ACM Guides DHL and PostNL in Adjusting Sustainability Claims

03.10.2024 | 🇳🇱 Dutch competition authority

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has influenced DHL and PostNL to modify their sustainability messages aimed at consumers, urging them to refrain from making misleading claims about the environmental impact of parcel delivery.

The ACM investigated sustainability claims in the transportation sector, focusing on parcel delivery providers like DPD, DHL, and PostNL. DHL and PostNL agreed to alter or remove certain claims following discussions with ACM, aligning their communications with real sustainability efforts.

PostNL, for instance, revised its claim from 'Your parcel is sustainably delivered' to 'For the final leg right up to your door, more and more of our delivery vans now run on electricity or biofuel'. By mid-2025, all misleading claims will be eliminated, including those related to the delivery vans.

ACM's Director of Consumer Department highlighted the significant environmental impact of parcel delivery, emphasizing the importance of accurate sustainability claims to help consumers make informed choices. ACM's revised Guidelines on sustainability claims serve as a reference point for companies to ensure transparency and accuracy in their communications.

ACM's oversight aims to foster fair competition and protect consumers from deceptive sustainability claims. By adhering to the Guidelines, businesses can promote transparency and enable consumers to make sustainable choices confidently. The Guidelines provide 5 key principles for companies to craft accurate and meaningful sustainability claims.
