11.12.2024 | 🇳🇱 Dutch competition authority
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has observed a marked decline in complaints about paid directory assistance services, attributed to new regulations prohibiting the use of 0900 numbers for connecting callers to toll-free 0800 numbers. This change, implemented in December 2022, has resulted in a significant reduction in reports, with ACM now receiving only a handful compared to dozens in previous years.
Despite this positive trend, ACM remains vigilant against new deceptive practices that have emerged. Some fraudulent businesses are circumventing the new rules by using Google ads to mislead consumers into calling paid directory assistance numbers disguised as customer service lines. These calls often result in long wait times and high costs without providing any real assistance.
ACM has taken action against these new misleading practices, withdrawing multiple numbers involved in such schemes since the start of 2023. The authority emphasizes the importance of consumer awareness and encourages individuals to verify contact details through official company websites to avoid unnecessary charges.
In addition to directory assistance services, ACM has also tightened regulations on subscriber information numbers, which has similarly led to a decrease in complaints. The authority continues to provide resources and tips for consumers to help them navigate these services safely.
